There is a Story

Every life is a story.

Yesterday I had a phone conversation with a woman with whom I have been friends for over 40 years. A companion in mind and spirit, she is intelligent, creative, and kooky. We laughed long and hard yesterday. This friend was recently diagnosed with the "beginnings of dementia," no fancy names just dementia. Long before she sought the aid of a physician there had been signs, but we didn't want to pay attention. She still seems mostly her old self, but she is concerned as am I where it's all headed. Vowing not to let it get her down, she's doing all kinds of cognitive work and says some days are good and some not so. I reassure her that is just the human condition.

Parts of our conversation were focused on events long past and at times it took both of us plus the husband to recall what we think might have happened. As I watched how our memories are fading, the situation got me thinking that it really is time to set down my life for whoever comes after that might give a shit. Which may be no one.

I'm not much of a fiction writer or I would write in that way, give myself another name and write someone else's story which would be truly mine. mallorys_camera said that all fiction is actually autobiographical and she's right. But I haven't been able to fictionalize myself so I guess I'll have a go at just telling it as it was.

I will begin with my great-grandmother, Sarah Butler Essex Daniels, about whom I know very little, but at least do remember her. The plan was to start today, but I can't seem to log into my account at ancestry and am too aggravated right now to keep on trying. Much easier to access what's all ready recorded there for a jumpstart.

Besides, I don't have a title.

I love the newspaper article... 'their first child' - with the presumption that there will be many more. were there? or do I need to stay tuned to find out? I will for sure.

I think it's cool that you want to record your life story. I bought a scrapbook quite some time ago to put things in about me, but I haven't done it yet.

How very interesting! I hope you post it here.

I have a photo of my grandma that looks very similar to that pose.

THIS - I hear and speaks to me loudly:

"the situation got me thinking that it really is time to set down my life for whoever comes after that might give a shit. Which may be no one."

It's insightful to me to find that one sentence in your post the screamed at me. Right now.

We need to sit down over a cup of coffee sometime and talk.

Hmmmm.?.my ongoing struggle with low self esteem is intriguing? Undoubtedly it will emerge as the driving force it has been in shaping my current existence as I reveal more about my life.

Would love to have the chance to talk real talk with you.

My birth was announced in the newspaper too!

And my lifestory would begin w/ my great grandma, as well. But I have very few memories of it all. Dementia or not, it all comes down to so few memories! In relation to the amount of time we’ve been alive, and such. It is fun to write it!

“All fiction is largely autobiographical and much autobiography is, of course, fiction.”

― P.D. James

It is SO true and resonated with me, as well. Made me stop dreaming of writing an autobiography (someday) and I'm now focused on my stories. My "fiction". I like the idea of someone having to piece it all together based on random tidbits from various novels because I was "too weird" to give interviews >:>

I just read the From Where I Sit one--incredible. Looking forward to more <3

Ancestry is fun and something I just recently decided to research for my own family. My mom gave me a book that had preprinted questions in it and she wrote in her answers about different things in her life and mine. It is neat and I pull it out from time to time and read. I gave my dad a similar type book for Christmas a few years back and asked him to fill it out for me. I haven’t received it back but I hope he has or is writing in it.

I can’t wait to hear more about your history.

My daughter gave me a similar book but I must admit, I've not finishing filling it out.

Have been researching family for years, wish I had asked more questions before everyone died. Back to the 1600's on both sides, totally British Isles it seems. Have an ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War and quite a few on the side of the Confederacy. I get on ancestry and spend hours.
